Make the Ordinary Come Alive

Good Morning!

Parenting can be a wonderful job most of the times…however all parents get bogged down by it once in a while. Here is a small poem from the book (The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents by William C. Martin) which I found quite inspirational and apt for parents of today’s times:

Make the Ordinary Come Alive

Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.

Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is a way of foolishness.

Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples, and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.

Would love to know what is your take upon this. Happy Parenting 🙂

Books Children Love

This post has been long due. Many of my library members have asked me about book reccommendations.and found that very helpful towards igniting the passion of reading in their children. Today, I am going to talk about books for children 8 years and above.

Well, there are many books which can be grouped into ‘Suggested Reads for Relucatant Readers” or “Recommended Reads”. However, let’s start with a simpler list today; these books can push your child towards READING as a hobby 🙂

A small list of books that most of the children 8 years and above love reading!

Try books by author Roald Dahl; children are quite fond of his books. You can start with Fantastic Mr. Fox and proceed to The Magic Finger, The BFG and more. Children will connect better with the books if you can combine reading with watching movies based on books. For example, bring a DVD of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory once she is done with the book. Remember—-First read and then watch the movie based on the book and then go back and re-read the book.

Popular Reads

Popular Reads

Moreover Geronimo Stilton and Thea Stilton books are a hit with children now-a-days. You can also try humourous books like Horrid Henry series, with children who are naughty and are looking for fun reads! Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne are great reads where infotainment is concerned. The Magic Tree House books are not only fun to read but also provide a good deal of facts and knowledge snippets to children. Many girls are in love with Rainbow Magic Fairy books and Dork Diaries! Well, how can we leave behind Diary of A Wimpy Kid series behind which again are a huge hit with the younger generation. Not only this, we have a complete collection of Enid Blyton’s The Naughtiest Girl in our library, which have been loved through generations. Children also like to read Junie B Jones books which they can easily connect with; however I would not personally recommend Junie B Jones, especially because they occasionally use words like ‘bestest’ , ‘stupidest’ and so on. However, if your child is a reluctant reader, I would suggest that there is no harm in starting these books. Once the child is hooked to READING, you can steer her to great books. Other books which are popular in this age group are Harry Potter, Jack gets a clue, Black Beauty, 39 Clues and Boxcar Children.

I’ll come back soon with some “recommended books for 8 years old and above”. Till then try out these books and give us your feedback.

One Small Step For Man…………

“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”

Do these WORDS ring a bell ???
Yes,  famous words by an equally famous man…………..the FIRST man on moon- Neil Armstrong!
He’ll be forever remembered as the First Man ever who put foot on the moon. Well, we cannot experience what Mr. Armstrong must have felt on moon………but we can always imagine it!

Enhance your child’s imagination and knowledge by reading this marvellous, big sized book with your child and relive the magic of swirling in space! This is one of the best non-fiction books on realistic experience on moon. No wonder it has received the Booklist Editor’s Choice award for its excellence!

I am sure that your kid will dream to be an astronaut after reading this book. Amazing full page illustrations will surely enhance the reading interest of the kid. The best illustration is a four page fold out showing the glorious burst of colours on Earth in strong contrast to the black and white shades of moon.

Emerging Readers

Has your kid just begun kindergarten? Well, then this is the perfect time to introduce him/her to the books written by Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss is perhaps the most widely recognized children’s book author ever published. The books written by Dr. Seuss are not only entertainingmotivating  but also quite insightful.  The kids love the wacky illustrations, funny verses  and addictive rhyming  text in these books.

The text in Dr. Seuss books is meant to be read aloud, or even performed.  Incorporate drama and inflection into each verse, demonstrating to your children how fun and interactive reading can be.

In fact one of my library members even pointed out that  her son’s reading earlier was mechanically good, but a bit on the monotonous side. However after reading aloud a lot of Dr. Seuss books, his reading skills have improved; now there is a lot of excitement and voice modulation when he reads.

Following Dr. Seuss books are best for emerging readers in 4-6 years age bracket!

  • The Cat in The Hat
  • Wish For A Fish
  • The Foot Book
  • I Wish I Had Duck Feet

All About HOUSES

A House is a house for me

This is an award winning book with a dose of humour and knowledge. Its rollicking and rhyming verses makes it a perfect book for ‘Read Aloud’ sessions. It introduces the kids to various kinds of animal houses as well as stretches the kid’s creativity about abstract ideas. Some of the houses are familiar, such as an anthill and a dog kennel, while others are a surprising treat, such as a corn husk and a pea pod. This longtime favorite is filled with unique illustrations that parents and children will want to look at again and again.

“A hill is a house for an ant, an ant.
A hive is a house for a bee.
A hole is a house for a mole or a mouse
And a house is a house for me!”

This book not only focuses on “learning with fun” kind of concept but also coaxes the kid towards free imagination and creative thinking skills. It is the kind of book which will appeal to children of all ages.

A Perfect Winter Read!

“It seems like Bear can sleep through anything. As a succession of animals enter his cave to escape the fierce storm, he continues to snore. Mouse makes a nice warm fire, Hare cooks popcorn and Badger brings treats…They are having a great time. But when Bear wakes up and realizes he’s missed out on the fun, his visitors fear the worst. Can Bear be persuaded to join the party?”

Bear Snores On

Bear Snores On

A fabulous book with a lyrical text coupled with a cute BEAR story is a hit with smaller kids. Also the full page colourful illustrations enhance the beauty of the story!  This story line is not only entertaining but also introduces children to the concept of ‘Hibernation’ in a fun learning manner. Not only this,  the book also mentions so many different animals and insects who hibernate. Unlike most of the children books, this one manages to be fun, charming and sweet all at the same time.

This is a delightful read aloud book for toddlers. Also try this book if your kid is a reluctant reader. I am sure he is going to fall in love with books right after reading this one.
